The Mirror Ball is an effect that was best known for its use in the 70s and 80s, particularly in Saturday Night Fever.  It’s also known as a “Disco Ball” or “Glitter Ball”.

In the 90s and 00s, it was seen as a bit “cheesy” and “dated”, but it’s made a comeback!  The humble mirror ball is back in vogue – and rightly so, because it’s classy, timeless effect looks incredible in venues.  It’s one of the only effects that truly fills a room.

However, there’s a few things to watch out for with a mirror ball:

Speed of Mirror Ball

If the motor powering it is set to run at a fast speed, then the effect can be a bit overwhelming.  With so many dots spinning around the room, you can experience the same effect as being on a rocking boat!  Find out from your DJ how fast their mirror ball spins, otherwise if it’s too fast you might find the effect a bit too much.

Light shining at Mirror Ball

A mirror ball requires a high powered light to be effective.  Many DJs lose the effect by running a low powered light pointing at the mirror ball.  This creates a few dots in the area immediately near to the mirror ball, but it doesn’t cut through to the other side of the room.

Size of Mirror Ball

A small mirror ball won’t have as many pieces of glass on it as a larger ball.  The bigger the ball, the more pieces of glass.  Each piece of glass reflects the light, and creates a “dot” on the wall.  So the more pieces of glass, the more dots, and the better the effect.  A small mirror ball can work in a small room, but as your venue gets bigger, you need a bigger ball to be effective.
